Orton Gillingham vs. Wilson - What's the Difference?
Orton Gillingham is a methodology for teaching struggling readers, particularly those with dyslexia. The methodology's core components are systematic, explicit, multisensory instruction. Students learn the rules of the English language and how to apply them to reading and spelling. New concepts are introduced at the child's pace. Since this is a methodology rather than a program the scope and sequence is a bit more flexible and allows a trained teacher to make instructional decisions based on the needs of each specific learner. The learner's needs determine the pace and content of the lessons.
The Wilson Reading System (WRS) is a program. It incorporates the principles of the Orton Gillingham method. Since WRS is a program it has set guidelines for when students move to a new concept and the order in which concepts are introduced. These qualities are what make it a popular program for schools, as there is a higher likelihood of continuity from teacher-to-teacher and grade-to-grade. If your child is already receiving Wilson instruction at school, WRS tutoring or Orton Gillingham tutoring can be a great complement to those services.
